We arrived in Madrid after a long night on the train. Most of us slept comfortably enough. After breakfast at the hotel, we enjoyed the gorgeous sunny weather by strolling up and down Calle de Goya, one of the main streets in the city. Some of us checked out Corte Ingles, a department store much like Gallery Lafayette.
After lunch on our own, we visited the Palacio Real. Its splendor rivaled Versailles! Many of the students were entranced by the collection of priceless Stradivarius instruments. When one of the instruments is taken out to be played, two guards protect it at all times.
We also took a bus tour of the city. We took lots of photos at the monument of Cervantes, author of the most well known Spanish novel, Don Quixote, in the Plaza de Espana.
Dinner was at 8:00, which is early for Spain, though it felt late to us. After a feast at the buffet, we rode the Metro to Puerta del Sol and Plaza Mayor. Students took in the nightlife, entertained by street performers and magicians. Meghan, Alex, and Kendall ran through a tunnel of toilet paper blowing up from a subway air vent, and Nish was frightened by a living statue standing next to a table featuring three heads. Little did we realize the head in the middle belonged to a real person sitting inside the table. When Nish approached to check out the masks, the middle head came to life!
We ended the evening by taking turns stepping on the zero kilometer of Madrid, which is in Puerta del Sol.
